The following is a bizarre conversation capture between a computer server or otherwise unidentified computer program or user who knows a great deal about "Serial Experiments: Lain".

There is no guarantee or authorization regarding the truth behind this transcript. Simply view it as a conversation between 2 entities regarding Lain.

I typed this transcript from printed pages that were acquired so please excuse the formatting and typos. I didnt simply 'cut and paste' this info. Due to all the work involved please dont use this transcript without permission. thanks!
Lain Server: The Lain Server program is a device that may assist you in your quest. But beware because i will also lie to you or tell you half-truths. I have been programed with that ability and desire.

User: um.. ok

Lain Server: Do you still wish to proceed? y/n

User. y

Lain Server: Loading Navi system Protocol 7............

Lain Server: Welcome to the Lain Server program. what questions do you have?

User: Define Serial Experiments Lain?

User: Has Lain been on/in the wired before we see her?

Lain Server: In the beginning we are introduced to lain and she has a sort of amnesia--She doesnt know who she is or where she came from. She is in a controlled environment without much access to the internet or computers in general. She has a 'kiddie' computer but its not powerful. We have to figure out Lains history and we find this out closer to the end of the series. In the beginning of the series, Lain is just starting to become aware of her true purpose. The world she sees around her is not quite right and she knows it deep down. As she becomes more aware of the power of the internet and her special abilities she becomes more in touch with her true self.

User: Why is Lain such a dead head in the beginning?

Lain Server: In the beginning we are introduced to lain and she has a sort of amnesia. She is in a controlled environment without much access to the internet or computers in general. Lain is a 'dead head' because she is just becoming aware of her true purpose. The world she sees around her is not quite right and she knows it deep down. As she becomes more aware of the power of the internet and her special abilities she becomes more in
touch with her true self.

User: Who is talking to lain, ('good morning lain'), how?

Lain Server: Towards the middle and last half of the series Lain finds a THING (a person, lost soul or computer) that has lots of power and is, lets say, a master hacker or computer expert.

User: Who or What is Lain?

You asked a very complicated question. Perhaps theres no straight answer to this. I think theres alot to talk about to define her. Some people have tried to explain Lain as just a 'computer program' but that leaves alot of questions also. Yet, she has a special ability to communicate with computers. I believe Lain is not JUST a computer program and shes not JUST a little girl. She is something else and she is both. I hope that isnt confusing you. There is a hint in the series about where she came from. She has something to do with the 'K.I.D.S.' program.

User: Is lain a computor program that exsists with a body in the real world who controls that game that makes people feel like theyre really in it or is she god and she just doesnt know it?

Lain Server: Lain is not JUST a computer program and shes not JUST a little girl. She is something else and she is both. She has something to do with the 'KIDS' program that scattered hundreds of childrens souls into the internet and she has power almost like a 'god' but shes something else. The series shows us that there is some higher power that is in control perhaps as a 'true God' above it all.

User: so lain is real human being?

Lain Server: perhaps she is a human who has been 'altered' or 'evolved'

User: What is the "K.I.D.S." Program?

Lain Server: Remember that government project with psychic children that scattered hundreds of childrens souls into the internet, in a way it killed thier bodies (bodies without a soul are useless) yet also locked thier souls in cyberspace forever. This is a secret that explains LOTS of the mysterious things that take place in the series. Keep it in mind.

User: those kids in the K.I.D.S. program had some psychic abilities right?

Lain Server: yes

User: What does that have to do with Lain?

Lain Server: What if Lain was the only child to return from the experiment alive. Somehow a child altered from the experiment. OR simpy a byproduct that appeared as a result. Maybe Lain existed before the K.I.D.S program but didnt exist as one child until after the accident.

User: So Lain came from the KIDS experiment?

Lain Server: Its something to consider.

User: was Alice really screwing with her teacher at her age?

Lain Server: maybe

User: what i dont get is at the end when Alice sees lain and arisu is grown up but lain isnt..

Lain Server: Think of Lain as having all the powers in the series. Other people were using it. Lain finally learned to use her power to help Alice she took herself out of the picture for everyone

User: how was she helping her?

Lain Server: because all the problems were caused by people doing harm in her image 'hackers' starting rumors about alice sleeping with teacher etc.

User: that was the wired lain not hackers

Lain Server: yes but hackers were doing it in her image thats what the 'evil lain' was. Eventually the REAL lain took control of her identy. Its like someone using your screenname

User: Who does Lain see on the train tracks and what is she doing there?

Lain Server: The girl on the tracks is another student from Lains school who commits suicide. There are several kids from her school who commit suicide or some other kind of unexplainable death.

User: How does lain smash the glasses on those borg guys?

Lain Server: Lain is discovering special powers that she didnt know she had. It is a psychic power blast that she uses. There is a reason she has this power that is hinted at in the series.

User: who the hell was the little Roswell alien what was its purpose..

Lain Server: the internet is FULL of speculation and RUMORS. The Roswell thing is a perfect example. I think all that part of the series showed that LAIN was absorbing RUMORS and incorporating them in her personality.

User: Can people on/in the wired interact with the real world?

Lain Server: That seems to be happening in this series. Lain may be some sort of link between the two.

User: What are these strange figures walking around/through things?

Lain Server: Havent you ever heard of ghosts? This series suggests that people and spirits wander the empty places between the wired and the real world. It may have to do with the "K.I.D.S." project.

User: What prompts lain to confront the gunman and what gives her such confidence, and that whole scene confuses me.

Lain Server: If you notice her actions, Lain is not in control of her powers at this point in the series. Now remeber what made the guy with the gun go bezerk? The drug he was using was a mechanical drug -- Accella. Either it was lains subconscious or someone/something using her (posessing her) that *knew* lain could control the guy with the gun using the Accella somehow. For more info on WHAT was going thru his mind look for hints on this website under the NOVEL version of lain here: <http://misslain.homestead.com/deathcyb.html>

User: What does Lain do to the man with the gun in Cyberia?

Lain is not in control of her powers at this point in the series. Now remeber what made him go bezerk? The drug he was using was a mechanical drug - accella. Either it was lains subconscious or someone using her (posessing her) that knew she could control him thru the drug. For more info on WHAT was going thru his mind and HOW she controlled him look for hints on my website under the NOVEL version of lain here: http://misslain.homestead.com/deathcyb.html

User: Who is Eri Masami?

Lain Server: Eri Masami is a dead scientist. He is using power from lain to make himself something he is not.

User: was he REALLY a god?

Lain Server: or was he LYING

User: he was acted as god and he had worshipers

Lain Server: many men CLAIM to be god if they have some power but Eri was NOTHING without Lain.

User: Why the question of god in and another god out of the wired are so important to the story line throughout the lain series?

Lain Server: I believe the idea is that humans who borrow power that has already existed and use it to create 'worlds' in the internet get full of themselves and think of themselves as a 'god'. This is true with Eri Masami. In the series LAIN is the one who has the most power. Different people and groups (like the knights) use some limited power and hacking skills and computer power or they USE lain and steal her own power to do what they want. Its like when they were stealing her image and doing things with it. People are 'gods' when they abuse power or think of themselves as a 'god'. It is the ability in humans to destroy and create that has always given us great potential for good and evil.

User: What does Phantoma have to do with anything in the story, and what is wrong with that little girl?

Lain Server: Phantoma was a video game that people could play on the internet. Like today, except it was heavy into virtual reality. It started to spill over into real life because of the evolution in the internet and the hackers causing accidents. The part of the story where the boy is running from the girl--he is scared for his life but the girl is really just playing a game of TAG. In a way thier games got mixed together. The boy thinks shes a 'player killer' and shoots her in self defense. He uses a hacker code that arms him with a "virtual reality" weapon.

User: That girl kills that fat guy right?

Lain Server: The fat guy is being chased by the girls ghost. She thinks shes playing tag, like a ghost stuck in the thing it was doing in life. Her soul is trapped in the internet. She scares the guy into jumping off the building.

User:Who are lains parents? Were they spies?

Lain Server: well we get clues to the nature of her parents dont we?

User: i dont remember

Lain Server:Well, her dad gets her set up on the computer, and theres that time they stare at her very oddly and the time when they speak to her in a trance-like state right?

User:Yes

Lain Server: So theres something wierd about her mom and dad. Now. Was MIKA really her sister?

User: I dont know

Lain Server: Well. remember early on MIKA asked her 'mom' about lain. saying 'somethings wierd with lain'

User: yes

Lain Server: So, we can tell that Lains parents were in on something that MIKA wasnt. Mika acted like a normal teenager. She thought Lain was her sister plain and simple. *Even when Lain was not present*, thats how you know that Mika believed she and her parents were who they said they were. The Iwakura family. Lains parents acted differently in private. There are 2 choices. Either Lains parents were "Actors" or "clones" (synthetic copies) of *real* parents that Lain and Mika share.

User: So lain has a real family? A physical family? But she didnt remember any of it when tachibana labs guy questioned her.

Lain Server: Perhaps the physical girl was part of that family before the KIDS experiment. The Lain you know may have taken her place.

User: That would explain Mika believing Lain is her sister right?

Lain Server: its one of many possible explanations.

User: so why was mika making the weird noises and how was she seeing the wired in the real world?

Lain Server: ok. first ask WHY something like this would hapen to mika

User: because shes lains sister?

Lain Server: Yes. Remember when the hackers blew up Lains computer with a virus?

User: yea the Knights

Lain Server: Something was trying to get to lain or control someone close to her.

User: whats up with Mika during the eps before the end where she is mumbling things and pretedning her hands a phone?

Lain Server: something happend to mika indeed. Would you say she knew much about computers?

User: no she didnt use them. She didnt connect to the wired

Lain Server: nope

User: So what happens to Lain's sister in the fifth layer?

Lain Server: Ahh yes poor girl. This one is hard to explain because it happens for so many reasons and its part of many subplots in Lain. I'll give you a short answer. Lain's sister's soul was 'hacked' into. perhaps to get closer to lain or for some purpose like that. She was not able to cope with the hacking and she lost her mind because she wasnt into computers and had no computer background. This is a half-answer but it will have to do for now.

More coming soon. Please email me any feedback at lain@ureach.com
