Serial Experiments Lain is sometimes a confusing and misunderstood story. The audience takes the point of view of a girl with not much memory as she discovers the internet and becomes a part of its evolution, and in essence the evolution of mankind.

Lain is a girl who we first meet when she has lost some of her memory. She starts to wake up mentally when she gets an email from her dead school friend. Shes curious and realises somethings missing in her memory when she starts to experiment on the internet (also called 'the wired'). Lain begins to realise that she has a special ability or gift with computers. She then begins to realise that her abilities and powers go much farther than just having 'computer skill'. You could almost say she is 'part computer' herself, but shes NOT simply a computer or robot or hologram. She is a girl with special powers. (see poem 'girl' on 'words' page at misslain.homestead.com/words.html) Things are not perfect in Lains life, because as she starts to discover her power, many kinds of people try to steal her power and use her for thier own purposes. Hackers, secret government agencies, and dead people - souls without a home, all try to use her, and they DO for awhile! They do this kind of like the way hackers do today when they steal someones "Instant Message" screenname or email account. As the series progresses, we see lain learning to control her special powers. That dosnt mean that all the questions are answered in lains life. There are some open ended questions that remain by the end of the series, which some complain about. Try to think of the ending of Serial Experiments: Lain as a beginning of a much greater story that we have yet to see from the Lain creators.
