Disk #1
In serial experiments lain, things get very weird very quickly, and they stay that way. A schoolgirl commits suicide, but several days later her classmates receive e-mail from the dead girl. One introverted 13-year-old called Lain replies, and her correspondent claims not to be dead, but to have passed into the "wired world." Eventually, Lain must join her. What follows is a story that combines virtual-reality, nanotechnology, a host of other science fiction concepts, and a healthy dose of postmodern paranoia. It would be unfair to reveal much more about the plot, but the phrase "nothing is what it seems" applies to just about everything in this compelling anime.

The beauty of serial experiments lain is the deliberate pace at which the story unfolds. Director Ryutaro Nakamura eschews the hyperkinetic style of many anime, allowing the plot to develop in slow motion and making every single image count. The first episode (a total of four are included) is a masterpiece of shifting moods and slowly building tension. Every detail--from the strange blotchy shadows to the ever-present hum of power lines to the slow tracking shots across the dazed face of Lain herself--helps create an atmosphere of unease, and as the truth is gradually revealed, that unease is amply justified.

The art direction is superb, mixing computer graphics with traditional animation and making frequent use of high-contrast images that set deep shadows against a blinding white sky. The first four episodes of serial experiments lain combine the millennial dread of Neon Genesis Evangelion with the subtle menace of The X-Files to create a uniquely disturbing beginning to an imaginative and intelligent story. Stay tuned. --Simon Leake

Reviewer: hairu from United States. I was kinda doubtful about this one myself before I bought it. But now that I've viewed it I cant stop thinking about it. I just ordered 2 more lain dvd's and will probably get the entire set. Yup, it's that good. It reminds me alot of Ghost in the Shell, but way way more weird and with a better story. No anime buff should be without it.

Reviewer: susan-chan from Ann Arbor, Michigan. I can't add anything new to the comments that have already been left here, but I believe this series is groundbreaking. It's subtle, entrancing, and thought-provoking in ways that other series are often not. Every image counts, and it improves upon multiple viewings. A thinking person's video, even more so than Evangelion.

Reviewer: Sean Shubin from California. Strangely addicting. After seeing the first episode, I couldn't decide whether I loved it or hated it. One thing was for sure, I had to see more of it. A dark and twisted tale in a world that would result from cyber-punk meeting David Lynch, it is mind-boggling how the show can have so much depth with so little happening. No sex, violence, or mechs, it is still the most creepy and disturbing film I have ever seen. If you don't mind shows that mess with your head, this one is not to be missed.

Reviewer: palazzo from Rockville, MD. Deep, silent and disturbing. Lain is definitely no ordinary anime. Besides the fact that most of the time the main character is still - staring at her computer screen - almost every scene hides a foresight of a future drama, a quiet yet creepy whisper of a world rumbling down, as Lain gets into the secrets of the wired network and learns about who she really is. A must-see for even those who don't like anime - most worshiped real-motion films around there are no match for this spectacular animation.

Reviewer: Breno Paolo (or Kensuke Aida *EvA* ^xENoGeaRs^) from São Paulo, Brazil. Ok, I have NEVER watched this anime. But i found a magazine review for it and just came here (to Amazon.com) to know more about it. I'm a big fan of animes anyway, and I love Evangelion indeed. Well, this anime follows the same "mood" of Evangelion and the same complexity of Ghost In The Shell. The story is fantastic, the animation is perfect, the characters are excellent and the music rlz. If u r going to buy this one, u should have already done that... WHAT R U WAITING FOR? And remember, "Close the world, txEn eht nepo"

I Finally bought volume one of Lain, hearing that it was quote "The Matrix taken to a whole new level."  A cross between that and Ghost in The Shell, with a twist.  While not for kiddies (FYI: The rating is 16+), this anime is able to deliver horrific suspense without excessing guns, monsters, or unesesary violence. Staring an intraverted 13 year old girl named Lain (which is a nice change from the usual beeming personalities of many anime heroines), she gets an e-mail from a dead girl named Chiza.  Ironically Lain seems to know almost nothing of computers but seems to have the ability to see strange things that happen in the real world.  This volume was one of the few that I've seen that leaves you flying by the edge of your insanity...it left you trying to figure everything out, yet still entertained! while strange now....by the end of episode four I was truly enthralled yet it almost seemed like nothing happened.  A must see! If you liked the Matrix, Evangelion,Akira, or even The ghost in the Shell..you'll love this.
